Cova del Torrent

Cova del Torrent

Concavitat entre blocs al torrent de la Diablera (Montserrat)

Bruc, El • Anoia26m0

A hollow between blocks in the torrent de la Diablera, in Montserrat, right by the path from the collet de Guirló to el Bruc, sunken and difficult to access.

Characteristics

Location

Located at the collet de Guirló, where we will leave the main path that leads to la Roca Foradada to take on the right the wide path that goes from the collet to el Bruc. The path descends along the head of the torrent de la Diablera, left bank, and after 5 minutes we will already see the megalith of the same name, located a few metres from the path on the right. An information sign indicates it. A hundred metres further on the path makes a sharp bend to the right, then shortly afterwards another to the left, not so tight. Right at this second bend, the path crosses the torrent de la Diablera. At the bend itself we will see on the downstream side of the torrent a huge block that occupies the whole bed of the torrent. Just below it is the cova del Torrent. Despite being only 5 metres from the path, access is not easy since the cave is very sunken and a detour must be made over fairly scrubby terrain.

Description

Morphology

The cave develops beneath some large blocks located in the bed of the torrent. Because of their size, the blocks appear on the cartography, both that of l'Alpina and that of l’ICGC, giving rise to the 722 spot height. Although the cave is right next to the path, it is not visible as it is sunken and access is not easy. Nobody passing along the path would say that a cave is right there.

The cave has two well-defined sectors. On the one hand there is a straight gallery with a stony floor along which the bed of the torrent runs. On the other hand there is a kind of chamber in the western sector, with a more clayey floor and situated at a slightly higher level with respect to the bed. The whole cave is comfortable to explore.

Hydrology

Along the straight gallery with a stony floor runs the bed of the torrent, whose water – when there is any – enters the cavity in a diffuse way between blocks.

History

The cave has gone unnoticed by speleologists and, consequently, does not appear in any catalogue. It is, then, a speleologically unprecedented cavity despite being only 5 metres from an important and well-travelled path.

It was discovered and excavated by Casas de Müller in September 1925. Outside the cave he found half a chamois jaw and ashes. In his report he mentions that when the excavation began the floor of the cave seemed disturbed, which made him suspect the existence of furtive excavations in search of treasures. During the excavations a very beautiful 37 mm axe appeared, as well as various fragments of prehistoric pottery mixed with other modern pottery and a modern mule bell. We can conclude that the cave has been used until relatively recent times, since it offers good shelter.
