Petita esquerda de 21 m. de recorregut a la zona superior de l'avenc del Xalau (Muntanyes de Prades)

A small fissure with a 21 m route in the upper zone of the avenc del Xalau, in the Muntanyes de Prades.

Characteristics

Location

On the TV-7044 road going from La Riba to the Pinetell, at the height of the Molí de la Font Gran and just below the Campament Juvenil, we find a prepared parking place. On the right side of the road there is a path that descends to the Brugent river, at this point almost always dry; we must cross it and follow the path in the direction of the cliff. Soon we will find a junction: the right one goes to La Riba and to the cova Cartanyà, while the left one, which is the one we must follow, heads to the climbing routes of the Cingle dels Pins Alts and to the Penya Roja. Immediately we will find a new junction: the left one leads to the climbing routes of the Cingle dels Pins Alts, so we will continue to the right in the direction of the Penya Roja. About twenty metres before reaching the small flat area where, on the left of the path, the mouth of the avenc dels Tres Grans opens, we will have to turn off to the right where there is a cairn, along a faint path that leads to one of the mouths of the avenc del Xalau. From here we will already see the mouth of the cave, which is in the rock face that we have about twenty metres to the N; the mouth of the cave is just behind the pit that forms the main mouth of the avenc del Xalau.

Description

Morphology

It is a fissure 12 metres long along its main axis, with small lateral branches. It really is no more than one more fissure, although without connection, of those that form the chaotic avenc del Xalau.

History

The only references we have are the survey that Albert Martínez (ERE – CEC) made when the exploration and survey of the avenc del Xalau was carried out in August 1973. It should also be said that there are those who call the whole complex of the avenc del Xalau the avenc del Fang.
