Cova de Mas Vilar

Cova de Mas Vilar

Petita cova de 24 m. de recorregut a Santa Maria de Miralles, (l'Anoia).

Santa Maria de Miralles • Anoia24m10m

Small cave with a 24 m passage in Santa Maria de Miralles (l'Anoia), with three entrances in a rock shelter and an inner chamber.

Characteristics

Location

The cave is located in Santa Maria de Miralles, in l'Anoia, on a small cliff of an unnamed stream that flows in a SE-NW direction from the Plana de l'Apotecari and drains into the riera de Miralles, almost opposite Mas Vilar (according to official toponymy), Mas Vilà as recorded in old writings and on signs in the area.

Leaving la Munia along the track that runs parallel to the riera de Miralles, at the second turnoff to the left begins the track that climbs up to la Llacuna. Here the vehicle can be left. A sign indicates the path to the cavity. First it is a very broken track that climbs steeply and ends in a small square. To the right begins a narrow path that goes up the torrent and leads to the cova de Mas Vilar, located at the foot of a small crag.

Description

Morphology

At the back and upper area of a large rock shelter about 15 metres wide by about 6 metres high are located three entrances that through separate passages, of little height, lead into a wide chamber about 2 metres high. From the back of this chamber, climbing slightly, follows another gallery of more reduced dimensions and that ends by closing after a few metres. In the centre of this gallery there is a chimney that rises about 3 metres.

Speleothems

The entire cavity, both walls and ceiling and floor, presents a fairly significant masking of lithogenic forms.

Other details

Small cave with a 24 m passage.

History

Certainly known since ancient times. In January 1951, on a visit to the Plana d'Ancosa by members of the GES – CMB, they claim to have explored the Cova del Mas Milà, which is possibly the same one that four years later, in April 1955, they visit again and already cite as Cova de Mas Vilà, although of these two explorations only a record remains in the GES activity book.

The first specific mention that we know of is the one provided by members of the SIS – CE Terrassa who visit and survey it in August 1976. In some archaeological works they mention it erroneously as if it were the Cova de Valldecerves and attribute to it an archaeological heritage that surely corresponds to the latter, although at the Cova de Mas Vilar it seems that excavations have also been carried out.
