Cova de les Xintes

Balma aprofitada per a usos agrícoles a Riba-roja d'Ebre

Riba-roja d'Ebre • Ribera d'Ebre8m0

A 43 m wide by 8 m deep rock shelter in Riba-roja d'Ebre, used for agricultural purposes, with a stone structure inside.

Characteristics

Location

About 3 km SW of Riba-roja d'Ebre. Starting from this village, we take the road towards la Pobla de Massaluca. After about 2 km, the road passes under the railway line through a narrow tunnel. Just before entering it, a track in good condition leaves to the left, which soon forks; we take the left branch, ascending. The track gains height and after about 2 km we must leave it to take a descending path, not very distinct, that leaves to the left and in about 5 minutes places us at the lower part of an olive grove. The cavity is located at the upper part of the grove, beneath a rocky stratum.

Description

Morphology

Rock shelter 43 m wide by 8 m deep, oriented to the east, although the vegetation makes the entrance almost invisible in the landscape.

Almost in the middle of the shelter there is a very well preserved structure made up of three stone walls, the rock at the back of the shelter being the fourth wall. It is a single room of almost square shape, 5.7 m on a side on average. Without windows.

Hydrology

In the northern part we find a round cistern made of stone and a couple of basins beside it, one of carved stone and another made of concrete.

Other details

Shelter used for agricultural purposes in Riba-roja d'Ebre.

Inside there is a space intended for an animal (probably a donkey or ass for agricultural tasks) and another space raised above the ground where we find a bed and a manger. Curiously, we also find a refrigerator.

Being in the middle, the structure divides the shelter into two parts. In the southern part, the more comfortable one, we find a small table and some chairs. In the northern part we find remains of old chairs, bed frames and a mattress.

History

The cavity appears referenced on the ICGC map and on other hiking maps. From the objects found inside (containers, cans,...) it can be deduced that it was used until the 1960s.
