Characteristics

Location

The cave is located in the SW of Lliurona (Albanyà). To get there, the best approach is to start from Tortellà and follow the road towards Sales de Llierca. Before reaching it, we will turn off to the left, taking the road – later an asphalted track – that heads to cross the Borró river. Once crossed, we have ahead of us 6 km of track – in good condition – until it ends at the inhabited farmhouse of Can Bosc. On foot now, we will take the path towards els Trulls, once a large farmhouse, today in ruins. We will leave els Trulls behind, which remains some distance to our right, and shortly before the path makes a fairly pronounced bend to the left we will leave it to take a little-visible trail that branches off to the right. From here to the cave, the route follows old charcoal-burners' paths, today half-lost and overgrown with vegetation, so care must be taken not to lose the trail.

The trail heads for a rocky ridge, on the other side of which we enter the valley of the Lliurona torrent, a left tributary of the Borró river. The ridge is an excellent viewpoint with good panoramas, especially towards the cliffs in front of us, among the most spectacular in the Alta Garrotxa.

The trail now continues along the shady side heading east and gently descending, passing old charcoal kilns, until it reaches the bed of the Lliurona torrent. We will cross it and continue on the other side, now heading west, and in about 5 more minutes we will reach the cave entrance, located just in front of a ledge, an old charcoal kiln.

All these reliefs were part of the municipality of Bassegoda (Garrotxa) later incorporated into Albanyà (Alt Empordà).

Description

Morphology

The mouth 2.8 m wide by 1.5 m high – opens at the foot of a small cliff. It gives way to a single chamber of more or less oval shape with maximum dimensions 13×8 m and an average height of around 2 m.

The ceiling coincides with a bedding plane that dips moderately towards the east, so the ceiling height gradually decreases in that direction. The floor is relatively flat and dusty, except for the western sector, which is rocky and somewhat sloping.

Other details

It shows signs of having been used by humans, with fragments of pottery (modern) found there. The cave floor has some goat and roe deer droppings, which are different and easily identifiable.

History

In the year 1931, Pere Vayreda i Olivas (1877-1941) published the monograph: Santa Maria del Mont. (Noticia històrica d'aquest santuari). In this work, as Document no. 1, he adds a list titled, Balmes i habitacions humanes primitives que hi ha esparses per la muntanya. He places to the west of the sanctuary, Balma de les Lloredes, sota Lliurona. Habitada fins els temps moderns, (sic).

Practically unpublished cavity. Located and visited by Ferran Cardona (ECM Barcelonès) on 6-8-2019 while carrying out cataloguing work.
