Cova de la Vila

Cova de la Vila

Coneguda balma vora la població de Godall (Montsià).

Godall • Montsià7m0

A 38 m rock shelter near Godall, in the Montsià, shaped like a half-moon at the foot of a small crag.

Characteristics

Location

Less than a kilometre south of Godall, in the Montsià, in a corner that gives rise to a secondary torrent as it surmounts a small crag. Leaving Godall along the Ulldecona road, we will soon come to a roundabout from which a secondary road heads east. We will follow it for about 200 m before leaving it to the right and entering a carob tree field.

From one of the terraces of the field a narrow path begins that in a few minutes will bring us to the cavity.

Description

Morphology

A 38 m rock shelter in the shape of a half-moon located at the foot of a small crag. Although at some point the height of the shelter reaches 6 m, most of it remains below 2 m. The maximum depth is 7 m.

Speleothems

On the south side of the cavity – where the torrent drops down – there is an old, very worn concretion that modifies the morphology of the sector, creating an inlet in the form of a small recess (“el Racó”) and also enclosing a space like an independent cave (“la Saleta”) with a passage of 6 m.

Hydrology

A torrent, usually dry, drops down through the shelter.

Progression

In “la Saleta”, with a passage of 6 m, one must advance crouched, and it is accessed through a small opening.

History

Known since time immemorial.
