Description

Morphology

The cova de l'Escoda has a wide vestibule of 7X8 metres with a slight ramp towards the interior, has a passage of 7 metres and had been used as a livestock pen.

Next to the cave there is a rock shelter with paintings known by the same name of Cova de l'Escoda, it is about 12 metres wide by about 3 metres deep at some point, and a height that ranges between approximately 4 and 5 metres. It is oriented to the south-south/east.

Other details

The painted figures are located in a small cavity situated at the right end of the rock shelter, the only place where limestone slabs of the former support are preserved and at a considerable height. 4 schematic and stylised naturalistic pictograms have been documented, corresponding to representations of two human figures (one with loop-shaped arms and the other a possible archer), a doe and remains of pigment of difficult interpretation. The most representative figure of the group, the doe, is located on the lowest level and is about 2.12 m from the ground. It has a small head with two large, pointed ears. The neck is quite stylised and gives way to an agile body that is incomplete in its rear part. The front limbs, which are preserved almost intact, are thin and show the nails. The technique used is the simple line, the flat wash and the irregular line, and the colours are red, reddish brown and dark reddish brown.

The Cova de l'Escoda has traditionally been included in the group of naturalistic rock art sites "Levantine".

History

Cavity known since ancient times, the paintings were discovered during the campaign carried out in September 1922 by the Archaeological Research Service of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, a campaign in which Lluís Brull participated as a collaborator. The objectives of this campaign, directed by P. Bosch i Gimpera and J. Colomines, were to study the paintings of the Font Vilella and to carry out various surveys. The results were published in the Anuari de l'Institut d'Estudis Catalans.

On 23 September 1973 the cave was visited and surveyed by the GE Pedraforca.

During 1987 the paintings were the subject of exhaustive documentation, within the "Projecte Corpus de Pintures Rupestres de Catalunya" carried out by the Archaeology Service of the Departament de Cultura de la Generalitat de Catalunya.

Declared Bé Cultural d'Interès Nacional-Zona Arqueològica (BCIN). Register No. Bic: R-I-55-0334. World Heritage. UNESCO, December 1998.
