Cova de l'Agulla Manolito García

Petit túnel de 18 m. de recorregut a les Agulles (Montserrat)

Bruc, El • Anoia18m2m

Small 18 m tunnel in the Agulles (Montserrat), it crosses the needle from NE to SW a little more than ten metres from the summit.

Characteristics

Location

From the Agulles refuge (Vicenç Barber) you must take the path of the Canal Ampla to the agulla Sense Nom. Here you climb up on the left, along a slope full of holm oaks, to the E base of the agulla Manolito Garcia (known as cota 94, according to Ramon de Semir's map).

From the foot of the needle you must climb up using at first the roots and the tree that grows in the same little channel. We continue along a subvertical scramble with many holds, about 15 m of height gain, in which we can install a rope as an aid and for safety. We reach the mouth in the form of an inclined joint one metre wide by about three high.

The coordinates correspond to the NE mouth.

Description

Morphology

It is a small tunnel 18 metres long that crosses the needle from NE to SW a little more than ten metres from the summit of the monolith. Developed taking advantage of a pseudo-stratal intercalation with a slight inclination, it hangs from both mouths, which shows its residual character. The discontinuity that has been taken advantage of for the development of this cavity is the same one that gives the upper section of the needle its “hat” shape.

Other details

It constitutes one more testimony of the processes of fracturing and later alteration by meteorological factors of the conglomerates that with their morphogenesis originate and destroy these singular needles.

History

Located by Josep Guarro at the beginning of February 2013 during a photographic excursion in the area. After consulting a recent climbing guide to the Agulles area, he verifies that it was known to climbers, although speleologically it had remained unpublished.

On 20-12-2013, Josep himself with colleagues from the SIE – CEA, visit and survey this small cavity.
