Cova Alta de les Escales de la Gloria

Cova Alta de les Escales de la Gloria

Petita cova a la vall del riu Glorieta, Mont-ral

Mont-ral • Alt Camp9m1m

Small cave in the Glorieta river valley, Mont-ral, with a wide and high travertine mouth and a short gallery of 8.5 metres.

Characteristics

Location

The cave is located in the Glorieta river valley, in Mont-ral. It can be accessed both from the enabled car park (paid in summer and at weekends) located after the ermita del Remei in Alcover, where the walk is a little more than 4 kilometres, or better from Mont-ral, from where one parks to go to the gorges of the Glorieta river; from this point the route is approximately 1.5 kilometres. One must go down along the path that leads to Alcover; after passing the Mirador de les Fonts del Glorieta we will pass beside the old basin of the power station; after passing a leisure area, we will soon turn right at a point where we will find a wide terrace crossed by a path, on the right side of which there is a small cliff of travertines in which various mouths without continuity can be seen. One must follow the path to the end, almost touching the cliff over the Glorieta river. We will observe on the left a fallen block that forms a small hole; on the right there is a terrace at a higher level where the mouth of the cova de la Calavera is located. From the right side of the mouth we will follow the cliff climbing up to a terrace situated at a higher level; here we will find on the left a rocky outcrop that is easy to climb and that will lead us to a path; this path, to the right, as it is no longer used, has been closed by the forest and would lead us to the start of the path in the travertine area. One must therefore follow the path to the left to the end, since it only leads to the cave. This is located just above the cova de les Escales de la Gloria.

Description

Morphology

A wide and high mouth formed by travertines gives access to a short gallery that is slightly ascending, where we find a small step; the gallery narrows until it ends. The route is 8.5 metres, with a height difference of +1.5 metres.

Progression

The route is 8.5 metres, with a height difference of +1.5 metres.

History

A cavity known since ancient times, but which has never been catalogued speleologically. In fact, the last metres of the access path to the cave are laid on a large dry-stone wall attached parallel to the cliff and which allows this obstacle to be overcome; it is evident that the purpose of building this wall was to be able to access the cave. Some visitor inscriptions corresponding to the year 1990 have also been found. We do not know whether the cave is known by any name.
