Avenc Gran de Cabrera

Avenc Gran de Cabrera

Interessant avenc de 21 metres de fondària a la Costa de Cabrera (Mont-ral).

Mont-ral • Alt Camp129m21m

A 21-metre-deep pit at the Costa de Cabrera (Mont-ral), with 9 entrances, located by Juli Serrano (SIE-CEA) in September 2018.

Characteristics

Location

Going along the road from Alcover to Capafonts (TV 7041), before reaching Mont-ral and a few metres before reaching Km. 10, an initially asphalted track turns off, crossing the Pla de les Perdius. We will come to a crossroads where we will turn right towards the Pejan quarry (currently abandoned) and the Cabrera refuge. On reaching the height of the quarry the track makes a marked turn to the right followed by another to the left; we will continue straight on until reaching the next turn to the right; at this point we will leave the vehicle and go back a few metres in order to go down to a path that passes between the track and the residual cone of the quarry; we will follow the path in a N direction until we find a small trail on the right that in a few metres through the middle of the wood will bring us to the entrance of a small pit; a few metres further on we will reach a rocky area where the various entrances of the cavity are found.

Description

Morphology

The cavity has 9 entrances; five of them can be entered without equipment, another requires a rope and the other three are hung on the cliff.

The total length of the cavity is 129 metres with a drop of -21 metres.

Progression

Entering through the upper entrance, a series of climbs between blocks lead us to a wide gallery; before reaching the base, we find a low passage of a couple of metres that leads us to a gallery where we find a crossing; to the left a ramp gallery leads us outside through a wide portal. Back at the previous crossing, if we continue straight on we will find a small climb where the gallery continues until it comes out on the wall of the cliff; from the base of the previous climb, a lower gallery leads us to another exit on the cliff some 4 metres below the previous one. Back at the aforementioned crossing, a couple of metres further on to the right we find a narrow gallery with a series of ascending passages that lead us to the base of a wide shaft a little more than two metres high that gives onto the outside; on one side of the base of this shaft, we access through a small climb a gallery that leads us to a window that opens onto the cliff inside a large fissure parallel to the cliff, just in front of the two aforementioned exits that give onto the cliff. Coming out through the aforementioned wide shaft, we will head West outside, where we find a channel that descends in a N direction; immediately we will find on the right a wide entrance where a rope must be rigged to descend; if we continue along the channel, we will descend a small climb where at the base we will find a narrow 5-metre conduit that leads us to a wide gallery where we find on the left the access of the aforementioned entrance, while at the end of the gallery on the left we find the link with the upper accesses detailed in the preceding lines. If from the previous point of the gallery we head to the left, at the end of it we will have to climb 2 metres where against the wall there is a narrow semi-vertical passage that descends to a small room where there is a shaft; this can be avoided by a lateral passage between blocks that descends to the base of the shaft; at this point, on the S side the gallery continues until it becomes impracticable, while on the N part it can be followed descending by some stony ramps down to the final level at -21 metres.

Back at the main gallery, we will go to the end on the right, where we easily climb up until we find the aforementioned access that comes from the upper entrance and that leads to the cliff exit. At this point we will have to climb 2 metres on the right side to access a narrow gallery that ends at a 6.30-metre shaft that ends at the main gallery. Passing over this shaft the gallery turns and narrows, coming out at the base of a 1.70-metre shaft that leads us outside through another entrance. Back at the base of the exit shaft, we descend a climb where we find a short gallery that ends by closing up.

History

Located by Juli Serrano (SIE-CEA) in September 2018; the same month a first superficial exploration is made and on 27 September it is explored and surveyed; they return on 12 November to survey a nearby cavity that finally turns out to connect with the avenc Gran de Cabrera through a new access.

The name used to designate the cavity has been adopted from the toponymy of the area.
