Montmell, El • Baix Penedès16m8m

Characteristics

Location

On the TV-2401 road from la Bisbal del Penedès towards Juncosa de Montmell, almost reaching this last village, we find the turn-off towards Aiguaviva and the coll d'Arca; directly opposite, an asphalted road starts that ends after about a hundred metres and places us at the upper part of the quarry. We must follow the track heading to Puig Francàs; soon we will find a padlock that prevents the passage of vehicles. The path begins a gentle climb until reaching a marked bend to the right, where the climb becomes steeper until reaching a new bend, this time to the left; we continue climbing until reaching the next bend, this time to the right; 35 metres further on and to the left of the path opens the depression where the cavity is found.

Description

Morphology

A 3.50-metre shaft that can easily be descended without equipment places us in a sloping chamber, at the end of which a narrow passage between formation and with a small step leads us to a small room where the ceiling is 6.23 metres high.

Speleothems

The cavity is quite damaged, since there are many broken stalactites.

Progression

A 3.50-metre shaft that can easily be descended without equipment. At the end of the sloping chamber, a narrow passage between formation and with a small step leads to the small room.

History

The first news we have of this pit is given by Font i Sagué in his Catàlech (1897), referring to the data that Pau Teixidor, doctor of Rodonyà and delegate member of the CEC, contributed to the questionnaire on cavities that he had made the previous year. Thus he records: “A 30 minutes from the village. It has been explored by Pau Teixidor, who found many remains of animals there” (sic).

No further data were ever had about this cavity. In 1971, members of the SIE – CE Àliga explore a small pit 6 metres deep in the area of Puig Francàs, calling it Avenc de la Figuerota and in different hiking routes it appears cited with this name.

Until proven otherwise, we are convinced that this pit is the avenc de Puig Francàs cited by Pau Teixidor. It is located very close to the summit of the same name, beside the path and easy to explore without any equipment, since Pau Teixidor, fond of archaeology and palaeontology, did not have the tools to carry out the exploration of a shaft.
