Characteristics

Location

From la Bisbal del Penedès we head towards the el Priorat de la Bisbal residential area; once we have crossed the motorway bridge we continue straight on to carrer Segovia, we follow it until the asphalt ends, where we find all kinds of rubbish. We follow the dirt track heading towards the quarry; after 50 metres we find a path on the right that leads to the torrent, we follow it until we enter its bed, we go up the torrent bed for some 170 metres, until we find a small path on the left that climbs the left-hand slope as we advance, we follow it until we reach the quarry, we cross it following the small path; at the end of the quarry we find the bed of the torrent del Manyer, the small path continues along the right-hand side of the torrent (hydrographic left), after some 30 metres from leaving the quarry, we will find the entrance to the cavity; one metre further up is the other entrance blocked with large blocks, and 10 metres further on is the easiest entrance.

Description

Morphology

The cavity has three entrances. The one closest to the quarry is a vertical entrance, by means of a 6.50-metre pit; a rock bridge separates it from another entrance located 1 metre away and blocked by large blocks, probably to prevent animals from falling in at the time. Through the third entrance it is necessary to overcome a vertical step of 1 metre, followed by a further step of 1.70 metres, followed by a short sloping gallery that leads us to a room of 15X10 metres, the floor of which is gently sloping in a NE direction, while in a SW direction it is steeply sloping, where a ramp of blocks takes us along a short gallery to a final small room of 9X4 metres with a triangular shape, at the end of which there is a small pit blocked by blocks. The approximate vertical drop is 19 metres and the length is also approximately some 90 metres.

Progression

These data are the result of having made a survey from entrance to bottom and in the NE gallery, carried out in January 2016; it would be interesting to carry out a new survey.

Other details

Unfortunately, both outside and inside the cavity we find a large quantity of drinks cans (January 2016).

Update: Montse Mañosa informs us that, together with Jordi Navarro, both from the Centre Excursionista de Castellar del Vallès, on 2 April 2022 they proceeded to remove, both from the interior and the exterior of the cavity, all the rubbish that was there. We hope the current state lasts.

History

Known since ancient times in the area, archaeological prospections have been carried out there; the only article on the cavity and known survey is the one carried out by the SIE del CEA on 29 April 1973. It is also known as avenc del Manyer.
