Description
Morphology
The entrance is funnel-shaped and leads to a small shaft 3 metres deep. In an E direction there is a small hole and by means of a 2.5 metre drop one reaches a room running SE. On the E side of this room there is a small hole that leads to a gallery 7 metres long. This gallery is the continuation of the room, but due to a mechanoclastic process it is obstructed by a large block. Towards the end, the gallery turns in an S direction and further on in an SE direction, a very narrow point where the cavity ends. Returning, in the room at the beginning, at mid-height there is another gallery 8 metres long, 3 metres high and less than one metre wide. At the end, on the left side and after overcoming a small drop, there is another gallery of 4 metres following the same direction as the previous one.
Other details
The cavity opens in one of the terraces artificially stepped with stone walls to support them and use them for cultivation, hence its name Vinya d'en Tomàs; they are currently abandoned and wild vegetation covers everything.
History
Made known in May 1974 to members of the SIS – CE Terrassa while making some first incursions. In May 1976 they returned to finish the study and survey work.
In 2017 Carles Comadó published on the blog Topònims de Castellbell i El Vilar a note about this cavity in which, in addition to the coordinates of its location, he includes a photograph of the entrance of the cavity by Genís Frontera, although this photo appears erroneously rotated to the right.
Genís Frontera collected an anecdote related by Maria Riera i Riera, daughter of Cal Quildo in Burés, who explains that well into the 20th century, in the spot below the path leading from the industrial colony of Burés to the farming centre of Vilar, above the torrent del Puig, there is a rocky chasm that in winter expels a cloud of mist produced by thermal inversion. On seeing that smoke coming out of the bowels of the earth, some neighbours exclaimed: “look, the demons are already making fire!”.
