Graller de les Vaqueres

Graller de les Vaqueres

Cavitat de 62 metres de desnivell al municipi de Sant Esteve de la Sarga.

Sant Esteve de la Sarga • Pallars Jussà80m62m

A cavity with 62 metres of vertical drop in Sant Esteve de la Sarga, explored by the ERE of CE Catalunya in 1968 and 1969.

Characteristics

Location

In the municipality of Sant Esteve de la Sarga. From the Coll d'Ares we continue towards Sant Alís; on reaching the barranc de les Vaqueres (it is the second one we come across), we descend along the middle of the ravine until we reach a point where it narrows and becomes boxed in; once past this point we continue descending along the ravine for about one hundred and thirty metres more, where we will find on the left of the ravine a fairly large cairn, we follow it climbing back up on the left, where we will find two other cairns of the same characteristics and finally another smaller one that is where the cavity is located. One can also go along the left ridge of the ravine following the edge of the cliff until finding the cairns; this itinerary is more pleasant.

Description

Morphology

Elongated entrance of 4.5 x 1.5 metres. The shaft, with small ledges and steep ramps full of detritus from the jackdaws, reaches -33 metres; at this point we find a steep and unstable slope of stones that places us at the head of a 16-metre shaft. At the base of this we find the continuation along the NE end, first as a gallery and then an 8-metre drop. The cavity has a total vertical drop of 62.5 metres.

Hydrology

The bottom is usually occupied by a trickle of water.

Progression

This final section is only suitable for extremely thin people.

History

First explored by the ERE of CE Catalunya on 29 December 1968; they reach -56 metres. On 2 November 1969, another ERE team forces a narrow passage and reaches -62 metres.
