Forat Negre de Miravall

Forat Negre de Miravall

Cova de 59 metres de recorregut a Les Valls d'Aguilar

Valls d'Aguilar, Les • Alt Urgell59m0

A 59-metre-long cave in Les Valls d'Aguilar, with chambers and stalagmitic formations.

Characteristics

Location

To reach the cave, position yourself at the watering trough located about 50 metres before arriving at the Cova de la Font de Miravall. From this point we will observe that to the East there is a rocky spur higher than the others. We will therefore follow the track, which gradually fades, cross a torrent and shortly afterwards we will have to climb up an almost lost scree slope found inside the forest on the left of the track and with no path.

It is difficult to locate because it lies halfway up the cliff and cannot be seen from below. You must climb up the left side of the spur as we reach it, up to the top, and then, carefully, approach the cliff where we will see an old rope (danger !!) that should help us make the delicate, quite airy traverse.

Description

Morphology

The entrance consists of a chamber 10 metres long by 4 metres high, while the width ranges between 3 and 5 metres. At the back of the chamber and after a small step, we cross a rounded passage about 2 metres in diameter that places us in another chamber 5 x 2 and 2 metres high, where at the back and on the left we find a crawl of a couple of metres that will lead us to a triangular chamber with dimensions similar to the first but a little more than one metre high. On the right of the chamber one reaches the last chamber.

Speleothems

In the last chamber we find a great abundance of stalagmitic formation.

History

Known since ancient times by the inhabitants of the area, it may have been used as a hiding place at some point.

J. Senent and JM. Victoria (Montaña 100) mention the Miravall cave without further data. We therefore do not know whether reference was being made to the Forat Negre de Miravall or to the Espluga de Miravall. On the ICGC map it appears georeferenced as Cova de Miravall.

From the biospeleological data, we now know that it was visited by O. Escolà and J. Comas on 8-1-1987. It is not, however, until the campaigns carried out by GIRES Sesrovires during the 1990's that specific data on the cavity are available.
