Forat del Vent Glaçat

Forat del Vent Glaçat

Avenc bufador a Capafons.

Capafonts • Baix Camp62m8m

A blowing pit in Capafonts, discovered and explored in the late 60s by Josep Maria Capellades. The cold air current emerging from its mouth gives it the name Forat del Vent Glaçat.

Characteristics

Location

Located in the village of Capafonts, it is reached by a cemented track at the entrance to the village coming from the Mont-ral road, which, well signposted, indicates the font de la Llúdriga, where there is a first chain that prohibits the passage of vehicles. After 200 metres the barranc del Ribatell is crossed, and one continues for approximately some 700 metres to a second chain; following the signposts one arrives in a 10' walk (another 700 metres approximately) at the shady spot of the Font de la Llúdriga, located on the left of the direction of travel. The Font de la Llúdriga is an emblematic spot, a spring that wells up from the ground, and the theoretical source of the river Brugent. Then the river is crossed and one must go uphill slightly diagonally to the left through the thick boxwood until finding a small gully; following this always upwards, one soon passes the mouth of the avenc Capellades, descends a little and continues forward until at a short distance a rocky spur is seen where the mouth of the cavity is found.

Description

Morphology

A blowing mouth 0.60 x 0.70 m leads to an r-0.90, where there is a gallery in a Northerly direction that leads to a small P-3.70. This entrance gallery has a flat-out passage on the right, which it has not been possible to pass. Descending the 3.70 metre pit one reaches a gallery about 15 metres long and about 2 metres wide, while the height ranges from about 2.50 to 3 metres. If we head south, at 6 metres, and overcoming an r+0.70 one accesses a chamber between blocks about 2 metres in perimeter; at the end there is a small pit between blocks (0.90 x 0.40 m) through which, descending 1.60 m, one reaches a short gallery, where this sector of the cave ends. Turning back, where the r+0.70 was overcome, looking to the left a raised passage between blocks is observed where one must overcome an r+1.75, accessing an ascending gallery that is somewhat higher than the main gallery. At 1.20 metres there is on the right a small pit of -0.90 metres; 1.50 metres further on, on the left, there is a pit (-2.50 m) that leads to the main gallery. On the right there is a crawl of about 3 metres. Five metres further up, the gallery ends in a small room between blocks. Returning to the main gallery, base of the P-3.70, heading North, we leave on the left a P-3 that leads between rocks to a tiny room; at 7.80 metres it is observed that on the right there is a fissure at +0.90 m from which comes the air current that emerges from the mouth of the cavity; it is a very narrow joint (0.40 m) through which it is only possible to advance some 3 metres, because a block bars the way. Nevertheless, the continuation can be glimpsed, and moreover a sounding gives a P-3.70. This is the theoretical point of connection with a possible pit of about -17 m, which should be further up, but which for the moment it has not been possible to locate.

History

Discovered and explored in the late 60s by Josep Maria Capellades of the AAEEMI de Valls (currently AAEET de Valls). The first written reference is found in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya (1984), where, based on the data and survey provided by members of the SIEP, it was published erroneously as avenc d'en Daniel, when in reality this was the avenc del Vent Glaçat. The speleologists of Valls call it “Forat del Vent Glaçat”, due to the cold air current that emerges from the mouth.
