Albanyà • Alt Empordà13m11m

Characteristics

Location

A little more than a kilometre N of the summit of the Puig de Bassegoda.

Starting from Albanyà, we take the long cemented track towards Sant Miquel de Bassegoda. Shortly before reaching it the cement ends and we must continue along the track (now only advisable for 4×4 vehicles) in a steep climb up to the coll de Bassegoda and from there to the neighbouring coll de Principi, where we change slope.

Now the track descends. When the track forks, we follow the left-hand branch, which goes down through the obac dels Rabadans (a beautiful beech wood) and heads for the clot de Tumany (or Can Principi, according to other maps). Shortly before arriving, and shortly after passing a very pronounced bend of almost 180 degrees, we will find the entrance of the cavity on the right-hand side of the track, right next to it.

Description

Morphology

The entrance – not very large – opens vertically at the foot of the positive slope of the track, right next to it.

It gives access to a single 11 metre shaft. The shaft has a good bell-shaped profile down to the -6 level, where there is the beginning of a ledge – very steep and awkward to stand on – that drops into the second part of the shaft, of smaller section. The base of the shaft is occupied by stones.

Speleothems

The cavity is bare of formations.

History

It seems that the entrance was opened accidentally when the track was built, since it lies right next to it. The first report is given by members of the SIEP – CE Poblet (Barcelona) who one may suppose explored it in 1978, although they only mention it in a collection of cavities of the Garrotxa (Bol. SIEP no. 10 – 1978) as Avenc de la Font del Bosc de Ramadans and attribute to it 10.5 metres of depth. Later, in a new update of the map of the Garrotxa (Ed. Alpina, 1990) the list of cavities is enlarged and this pit appears -badly located- without providing any further data.

It is not until November 2016 that members of the EC Gràcia and the GE Badalona locate it and carry out the corresponding cataloguing work.

Note from Espeleoíndex: This cavity was not included in volume 4 of the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya (1980) because we had absolutely no reference, we only knew the name and the depth from a list of activities, I believe, if my memory does not fail me, of the Grup Espeleològic d'Olot which had explored it some time before. Those of the SIEP (one of them, F. Talavera, was on the Catàleg team) included it in the list of cavities. (JM. Miñarro)
