Description
Morphology
Cave of good dimensions, with 2 entrances, one on each side of the hill where it is located, which connect the two adjoining channels. It is made up of five spaces at different levels and interconnected. The first level is the main mouth of the cavity, located at the East end of the system; the fifth level corresponds to the small upper mouth located at the West end of the system.
First Level: Corresponds to the main entrance with a generous porch about 45 m wide and 24 m high. At the S end of the entrance are the remains of a defence tower and some ruined walls at the base; at the N end of the entrance is a ledge on which the ruins of a possible chapel and the corresponding necropolis can be seen.
Second Level: Made up of 2 independent chambers connected by a narrow impassable passage. The chamber located further S requires a climb of about 3 m to access it; it is initially composed of a wide balcony with different levels and after a turn to the right one reaches a gallery covered with flowstone; at the end of the gallery there is the impassable connection with the second chamber. The second room is accessed by a ramp beside the spring of the first level, ascends in a steep ramp and after some turns one reaches a wide chimney blocked by a large block that leaves three viable passages to access the third level.
Third Level: Once the passage of the large block is passed, we find ourselves on the third level, which has a wide balcony facing E over the main mouth of the cavity. In a SW direction one climbs toward a small chamber with no continuation; continuing to climb toward the W we will reach the base of the flowstone that, once climbed, gives access to level 5. In a N direction we can climb, squeezed between the large block and the wall, to access level 4.
Fourth Level: This level also has a wide balcony facing E over the main mouth, and an interior drop over the large block of the third level. In a W direction we will ascend to a gallery with abundant concretion in which there is a small chamber at a lower level.
Fifth Level: Accessed from the third level by climbing a flowstone of about 4 m and reaching the ceiling of the cavity, where the flowstone gives way to an ascending ramp conduit that allows exiting to the outside, at a small and discreet mouth suspended some metres above the bed of the adjoining channel and covered by vegetation.
Speleothems
On the second level, the chamber located further S includes a gallery covered with flowstone. On the third level, a climbed flowstone gives access to level 5. On the fourth level, in a W direction one ascends to a gallery with abundant concretion. On the fifth level, access is gained by climbing a flowstone of about 4 m.
Hydrology
On the first level there is a spring and a cistern built to store water in a good state of conservation; beside it is the ramp that gives access to the second level and above it the different terraces of the rest of the levels.
History
On 27 August 1910, Racovitza, Jeannel, Faura and Rocafort arrive at Serradell. They visit: Forat Negre and Forat la Bou. They cite by references, but it does not seem that they visited them: Espluga Sorta, l'Espluguell, l'Esplugallonga and el Barbuixell.
The following day, 28 August, they visit the cova de Toralla.
Thomas Casajuana, in his, and possibly last speleological writing (2000), makes a brief reference to a campaign by members of the Club Muntanyenc Barcelonès (Llopis, Thomas and others) carried out in the Serradell area in the year 1946 and which had remained practically unpublished. Among the cavities explored and drawn he mentions l'Esplugamorta, without providing any data. We suppose that it is a transcription error and that he is really referring to l'Espluga Sorta.
On 19 and 20 March 1960 it is visited by the ERE of the CE Catalunya, only a mention of the cave appearing in the magazine Montaña no. 60.
In August 2025, members of the Centre Excursionista de Castellar del Vallès make a visit to the cavity, documenting it more extensively and producing a more accurate and complete survey.
