Characteristics

Location

Hanging on a wall at the head of the left bank of the torrent Mal. From Cambrils take the road towards Solsona, over the pont del Clop, we will reach Serra Seca and turn off onto the path to the Móra Comtal. We will go down the path, not suitable for cars, and pass beside the Romanesque church of la Salze and continue down to the next bend to the left, before reaching some warehouses dedicated to agriculture. We will continue along a forest path on the right, right beside the aforementioned bend, which crosses a gully and climbs up to a field. Here we will leave the car and on foot enter up the middle of the gully, between the great walls of conglomerate. After an hour walking, we will have climbed a height difference of 100 metres having overcome all kinds of obstacles: water jumps, pools, walls, brambles, scrambles, etc. and we will climb on the right-hand side the left bank of the gully, a height difference of approximately 100 metres, scrambling up to the foot of the great rock shelter.

Description

Morphology

An entrance of notable dimensions (about 20 metres high by 20 metres wide) allows entry into a gallery that maintains these dimensions for the first metres. The floor is slightly ascending until reaching a 4-metre drop that must be overcome and above it the gallery continues a few metres more until the ceiling lowers to floor level and closes completely.

Speleothems

In the innermost area, stalagmitic floors and some area with small gours can be observed.

Progression

The first explorers (ERE – CEC, EDES, EDECA and CE Pirenaic, 1964) went by the direct route and from Cambrils approached the upper part of the crag and with the help of 60 metres of “elektron” ladders descended to the entrance of the rock shelter.

History

The first data we know are those of the exploration that in 1964 members of the ERE – CEC, EDES, EDECA and CE Pirenaic carried out, and although very minimally they appeared in the first volume of the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya (1978), locating it in the municipality of Oliana, a short distance from the comarcal boundary with el Solsonès. Now we can expand the information with the topography that appeared in the archive of the ERE – CEC and that had remained unpublished.

Once the record was posted on Espeleoindex, our colleague Jordi de Valles alerts us that it could be the same Espluga del Duc that members of the Centre Excursionista del Solsonès explored in 1995 and that he includes in his catalogue of el Solsonès, in the municipality of Odèn.

Comparing the two topographies we verify that indeed, it must be the same cavity, although with a very different topographic interpretation (we include both and let each draw their own conclusions). After a conversation with Oleguer Escolà, author of the first topography, we no longer have any doubt. Furthermore, we can know that at first they called it Cova de la Paret, a synonym that until now was erroneously attributed to the Cova dels Encantats de Vilamala (explored in 1965) and that like this one they accessed it by descending from the upper part of the crag with ladders.
