La Doux is a small cavity at the foot of the Pic de Brau, formed of a 2-metre porch, a muddy conduit and a terminal squeeze that pinches shut irremediably.
Description
Morphology
It begins with a pretty porch 2 metres high. A small step with a slab leads into the gallery proper, which takes the form of a wide muddy conduit, 1 metre to 1.5 metres wide and 0.6 to 1.5 metres high. After 24 metres, a small step leads onto the terminal squeeze, which pinches shut irremediably. No clue allows one to foresee any continuation or access to a body of water.
Hydrology
In winter La Doux fills with water, the gallery is entirely flooded (see survey) and a stream flows out of the entrance. The origin of this water remains mysterious: sinkholes of the streams upstream, overflow of the flooded karst, or both at once?
Other details
Geology: the cavity develops in the limestones of the Thanetian, gently dipping towards the West. The galleries are excavated along the axis of the fissuring, which is N 200°.
