Description
Morphology
The Coves del Mamut have different entrances, which topographically are numbered with the abbreviations M-1, M-5, M-6, M-7, M-8, M-9, M-10, M-12, M-12'. Through a wide entrance (M-1) between large blocks you descend into a room with a rounded floor plan and open to the sky, from which two continuations start, one heading from M-1 to the M-12 and M-12' entrances. Access is through a narrow and irregular gallery open between blocks, which descends to a room of 7x4x3 metres where, from the start of the same room, it links with a gallery that, after a small step and numerous narrow passages, meets the previous one again; on the right-hand side two exits to the outside can be seen; the first is reached by climbing a low-roofed gallery that ends in a flattener open to the outside (M-12'); the other exit is reached by following the main direction of the room to climb immediately to an entrance divided in two (M-12). Back in the entrance room (M-1), the other continuation in the direction of the M-10 entrance requires a short step (R-2) open behind a block to link with the main gallery of the cavity; this is straight in route and with a width of 2 to 3 metres, where both on the right and on the left we find continuations that end up becoming impassable; following the main gallery, about 15 metres from the entrance we find on the right a descending branch 4 metres long, this being the base of a +4 metre step that can be climbed, and it links after a low passage with one of the widest upper rooms of the cavity. This room is the junction point of 4 galleries; through the widest one and after an ascending route of 20 metres one exits to the outside a few metres above the base of the exterior fissure. The other three galleries open together on the same side of the room, two are closed by an accumulation of blocks, and the third, after climbing a steep slope, links with another gallery perpendicular to the previous one which, after 13 metres of route, leads to a shaft of -9 metres, which at its base links again with the main gallery. From the base of this shaft the main gallery changes its physiognomy and divides into two superimposed conduits; the upper one continues practically in the same direction until it joins the lower one, forming an irregular room from which four new branches start. The first requires climbing in remunage up the wall for about 18 metres and one exits to the outside through the M-10 entrance. The second opens on the left-hand side of the room and is the widest, although at 5 metres it narrows forming a gallery of irregular structure until reaching a new crossing with a gallery of larger dimensions. The third continuation is a gallery 7 metres long that links with the previous one shortly before reaching the crossing. The fourth follows the same direction as the main gallery, opens 2 metres above the floor hidden among blocks, is a 6-metre crawl that links with a gallery with a flat floor and ends at the crossing already mentioned above. At this crossing we find three new continuations. Through the widest gallery we can go 8 metres to a step (R-3), which once descended divides again; if we follow the same direction we can go 15 metres until it becomes impassable (point J). If we follow the gallery located under the shaft we can go 10 metres to a low-roofed room. Back at the crossing, if we follow in direction N, we find the highest and widest part of the cavity in a gallery of 13 metres, which is cut by a P-4 that can be down-climbed; at the base we reach a gallery of smaller dimensions with an ascending floor that leads to the outside in the great fissure and which in turn connects with the lower zone of the galleries of the M-9 entrance at point (L). Back at the crossing and perpendicular to the last gallery, another one 12 metres long opens, cut by a P-4, and ends up becoming impassable. As for the upper entrances, the M-5 entrance opens a few metres above the main entrance (M-1); at the foot of an elongated block one enters through a short gallery with a 45º inclination to a room where we find three continuations. The first, after descending a step, communicates with the entrance of M-1. The second follows a horizontal gallery that ends with a P-5, whose base is point (G) of the main gallery. The third follows the entrance gallery and ends in a chaos of blocks. A little above the previous entrance, we find M-6 or Forat del Xifre; its elongated entrance gives way to a gallery of 5 metres with a steep drop until finding a perpendicular gallery 7 metres long where we find a P-6 that allows us to access the main gallery. The M-7, M-8 and M-9 entrances open a short distance from M-10. M-8 and M-9 are two shafts of -9 metres depth that link with the horizontal galleries of M-7, which in turn link with those that start from the right-hand side of the main gallery of the Mamut. M-9 is the highest entrance of the system, +12 metres with respect to M-1. The exterior fissure develops parallel to the main gallery and to the axis of the Mamut cave; it is an open-air gallery 103 metres long with a width ranging between 2 and 10 metres and a height between 8 and 22 metres; it is completely full of vegetation, trees and enormous blocks. The total drop is 24 metres (+12/-12).
History
Known of old by the people of Vallbona as Clots d'en Romagosa, speleologically the first news of the cavity is given by the GIE del CE Gràcia at the end of the fifties, who at the same time rename it with the name Coves del Mamut.
