Coves de Ses Falugues

Ínfimes concavitats al paratge de ses Falugues (Begur)

Begur • Baix Empordà3m0

Tiny hollows in the ses Falugues area (Begur), small caves opened in granite, mentioned since 1883 and classified as tafoni in 2011.

Characteristics

Location

The small caves are located in the ses Falugues area, in Begur. They are reached from Aiguablava in the direction of Tamariu along the carrer de la cova del Bisbe, almost reaching the junction with the carrers de la cova d'en Gispert and the carrer Punta d'es Mut, where there is a round stone building, a electricity transformer with several rubbish containers. Just in front, a cemented street with a steep climb begins and leads to a junction of paths located at the end of the houses, the Puig de Cala de Cabres. Following the path on the right, in about 15 minutes one reaches the Puig de Ses Falugues, on the slopes and near the ridge of which the various small caves are found.

Description

Morphology

Caves no. 1 and 2 are two cavities of rounded shapes opened in granite, separated laterally by a couple of metres. Their measurements range between 3 m long by 1.50 m wide and 1.80 m high. Caves no. 3 and 4 have smaller dimensions than the previous ones: 2.50 m long by 2 m wide and 1.50 m high; they are also situated in parallel very close to one another. Caves no. 5 and 6, situated on the ridge, on the left side of the second hill, are in parallel with proportions and some morphologies with tectonic evidence similar to caves 3 and 4, but with a lower ceiling: 2.50 m long by 2 m wide and 1 m high.

Progression

When one reaches the first hill one must continue along the small col that approaches the second hill. Before climbing, one takes a small path that descends to the right and leads to caves 1 and 2, which are found at the foot of the wall facing the sea. Caves no. 3 and 4 and the following two were located by chance by members of the GEB while they were looking for caves 1 and 2. On 13 August 2016, members of the GE Badalona surveyed these two cavities, at the same time as they located and surveyed four other small caves near those already known.

History

Mentioned by the Begur historian and politician Josep Pella i Forgas in his Historia del Ampurdan (1883), attributing their origin to some excavations made by the Phoenicians. Collected by Font i Sagué in his Catálech (1897) and later in the rest of the speleological catalogues of the region. Recent studies (2011) carried out jointly by the universities of Girona and Barcelona have determined that their origin is entirely natural, classifying them as tafoni. Over time, legends and mysteries have been created around these small cavities.
