Location

On the BV-2441 road from Pontons to Valldossera, once past the turn-off to the “La Ponderosa” residential development and at approximately kilometre 12.500, we will turn right, onto a very characteristic flat area, “Pla de la Mariana”; in less than a hundred metres we will find the small entrance beside some cultivated fields that must be crossed.

Description

Morphology

Small entrance 0.60 metres high by 0.50 wide. A short slope of rubble ends in two branches: on the right we find a chamber at the end of which a small crawlway opens; on the left one descends down a slope to a chamber where we find an opening that gives access to another lower small chamber.

History

The first news we have of this cavity is that it was located by a member of the ERE – CEC towards the end of 1971. Having made contact with members of the SE Gelera, they carry out a first exploration on 23 January 1972 (Daniel Schibi, ERE-CEC and Xavier Bellés, Tere Cuñé and Juli Serrano, SE Gelera); they return on 6 February of the same year to finish the work, especially the biospeleological work.

The following month, on 21 March 1972, informed by a person from the nearby house of Cal Fontena, members of the SIRE – UEC Gràcia (A. Lagar, J.A. Alvarez and J. Abenza), also for biospeleological purposes, visit the cavity and name it Cova de Cal Fontena, a name that on subsequent trips they change to Cova de Can Joan de Solé, at the request of the landowner, Dr. Sans de Vilafranca.

To confuse matters further, we recall having seen it mentioned at some point as Cova Mariangla (perhaps they meant to put Mariana, in reference to the name of the flat area where it is located).
