Pontons • Alt Penedès 12m

Small cave about 12 m long in Pontons, known since ancient times and cited in 1943.

Characteristics

Location

Located in Pontons. It is reached via the BV-122 road heading west out of Pontons; at km 11.5 there is a turnoff to the right that leads toward la Llacuna. Immediately, some fortified farmhouses are seen on the left and the Torre de Cal Rei on the right. This paved track is followed until, at a left-hand bend, the farmhouse of Cal Galimany is found, notable for the painting on its walls; it is currently a shelter house for people who want to detoxify. From this bend, a dead-end tractor track starts, running alongside some fields and vineyards and bringing you close to a small rocky hill where the cave is located.

Description

Morphology

Small cave formed along a NE-SW trending joint. It has a small entrance chamber followed by a narrow gallery that becomes impassable after a few metres.

History

Known since ancient times by the local people. The first speleological data known were those given by members of SIRE – UEC Sants who visited it in August 1979. In February 2020 it was located by members of the espeleodijous who placed it correctly and provided other data about the cavity.

Briefly cited in an article in the journal Ampurias V (1943), where they say it had been excavated by Esteve Rexach and where he found various fragments of Argaric pottery, a basalt axe and two notable gold spirals (possibly used as earrings). Around 1972, Josep Ma Masachs (from Vilafranca del Penedès) visited the cave and called it Cova de Solanes (possibly because it is near the hill and farmhouse of that name, although they belong to the municipality of la Llacuna, Anoia). Shortly afterwards, members of GREV (Vilanova i la Geltrú) repainted the sign at the entrance and overlaid the name Cova dels Picons. To complicate matters further, J. Virella in his inventory of cavities (1979) mentions it as Cova dels Picons, but places it in la Llacuna. In the Inventari Arqueològic de la Generalitat de Catalunya it is documented as Cova de Solanes and they say that the name Picons is not correct.
