Cova Nº4 de l'Escudelleta

Cova Nº4 de l'Escudelleta

Cova de 14 metres de recorregut al barranc de la Pixera, (Capafonts).

Capafonts • Baix Camp14m2m

A 14-metre-long cave in the barranc de la Pixera, in Capafonts.

Characteristics

Location

Leaving the village of Capafonts along the TV-7041 road towards Mont-ral, at kilometre 21.22 a track branches off to the right; after a few metres we find a path on the left with a sign for la Foradada. We follow it and, on a steep slope, we climb without losing our way up to la Foradada. Once past it, the path continues climbing until we find a turning to the right; we keep climbing until we reach the foot of a cliff where all the caves and the spring known as Escudelleta are found. Once at the spring, we continue ahead 67 metres, where on the left we find a narrow path that in a few metres leads us to a large overhang where the two galleries of caves no. 4 and no. 5 of l'Escudelleta open; at the mouth of no. 4 there is a small dry-stone wall. These two caves are 35 metres before reaching the cova del Grèvol.

Description

Morphology

The mouth is 3.5X5 metres and gives access to a gallery 14.7 metres long on a gentle upward slope.

Speleothems

At the end of the gallery there is a curious flowstone that prevents access to a chamber that can be seen behind it.

History

Despite being known since distant times by the people of the area, the first mention we find is due to J. Ferraté (1918), who mentions the group of caves, calling them Coves de l'Escudelleta.

J. Iglésies and J. Santasusagna (1930), in their hiking guide to the Muntanyes de Prades, also mention them, but specify that the most important of all of them is the one called Cova del Grèvol.

In 1968 and 1969, members of the Grup Geogràfic de Gràcia (later EC de Gràcia) visit the cova del Grèvol, calling it la Cova de l'Escudelleta.

In 1981 and 1982, members of the SIEP – CE Poblet de Barcelona carry out a compilation work of all the cavities and number them (1 to 10), but call them del Barranc de la Pixera, although it would have been more correct to call them Coves de l'Escudelleta.
