A 13-metre-long cave in the barranc de la Pixera, in Capafonts.

Characteristics

Location

Leaving the village of Capafonts along the TV-7041 road towards Mont-ral, at kilometre 21.22 a track branches off to the right; after a few metres we find on the left a path with a sign for la Foradada. We must follow it and, on a steep slope, climb without losing our way up to la Foradada. Once past it, the path continues climbing until we find a fork to the right; we continue climbing until we reach the base of a cliff where all the caves and the spring known as Escudelleta are found. At this point the path runs flat towards the head of the barranc de la Pixera; before reaching the barranc we find on the right of the path a post with a sign indicating the cova del Grèvol. We continue about 50 metres further on, where we find on the left a small trail leading to cave no. 2 of l'Escudelleta, located at the base of the cliff.

Description

Morphology

The 10X5-metre entrance gives access to a semi-straight gallery that leads to a kind of final chamber from which two small passages emerge without continuation.

History

Despite being known since distant times by the people of the area, the first mention we find is due to J. Ferraté (1918), who mentions the group of caves, calling them Coves de l'Escudelleta.

J. Iglésies and J. Santasusagna (1930), in their hiking guide to the Muntanyes de Prades, also mention them, but specify that the most important of all of them is the one called Cova del Grèvol.

In 1968 and 1969, members of the Grup Geogràfic de Gràcia (later EC de Gràcia) visit the cova del Grèvol, calling it la Cova de l'Escudelleta.

In 1981 and 1982, members of the SIEP – CE Poblet de Barcelona carry out a compilation work of all the cavities and number them (1 to 10), but call them del Barranc de la Pixera, although it would have been more correct to call them Coves de l'Escudelleta.
