Characteristics

Location

Leaving the village of Capafonts along the TV-7041 road towards Mont-ral, at kilometre 21.220 a track leaves to the right; a few metres further on we find a path on the left with a sign for la Foradada. We follow it and climb steeply without losing the way up to la Foradada. Once past it, the path continues climbing until we find a turn-off to the right; we keep climbing until we reach the foot of a cliff where all the caves and the spring known as Escudelleta are found. At this point the path runs flat towards the head of the barranc de la Pixera, and finally we go back up parallel to it, until we reach a flat area where a track ends and on the right we find a small metal hut; from the path, we head left for about thirty metres towards the foot of the cliff, where we will find the cave mouth (la Cova).

Description

Morphology

A gallery 8 metres long with a section of 1.5X2.20 metres leads us to a squeeze 0.40 metres in section, which leads to another gallery 6 metres long. On the right-hand side of the entrance gallery, we also find a narrow squeeze that leads outside.

Hydrology

At this point the gallery continues descending until it reaches the sump.

History

Although they have been known since distant times by the people of the area, the first mention we find is due to J. Ferraté (1918), who mentions the group of caves, calling them Coves de l'Escudelleta.

J. Iglésies and J. Santasusagna (1930) in their hiking guide to the Muntanyes de Prades also mention them, but specify that the most important of all of them is the one called Cova del Grèvol.

In 1968 and 1969, members of the Grup Geogràfic de Gràcia (later EC de Gràcia) visit the cova del Grèvol, calling it Cova de l'Escudelleta.

In 1981 and 1982, members of the SIEP – CE Poblet de Barcelona carry out a compilation work of the whole set of cavities and number them (1 to 10), but they call them del Barranc de la Pixera, although it would have been more correct to do so as Coves de l'Escudelleta.
