Characteristics

Location

From Bovera follow the camí de Bellaguarda, which continues along the side of the Vall de Bovera. After 1850 metres, we pass in front of the balma de la Vall. From here we continue 2300 metres (ETRS89 coordinates 306373 – 4577430) and take a turn-off to the left until the next junction to the left, which we also take to the end of the track, at the E end of an olive grove (ETRS89 coordinates 306865 – 4577691). We continue on foot along a path in a NE direction for a little more than one hundred metres, where the path turns towards the N. The cave is about 100 metres away.

The E part of the rock shelter is in the municipality of la Granadella, while the W part belongs to the municipality of Bovera; the municipal boundary passes through the very middle of the rock shelter.

Description

Morphology

It is structured beneath an overhang 54 metres long and 6.5 metres deep, with a maximum height of 2.5 metres.

Half of the cave is enclosed by a dry-stone wall about 2 metres high. The floor is flat, with some rocks fallen from the walls and a large stone serving as a table and other smaller ones serving as chairs.

The other part of the cave has a lower ceiling and very deteriorated remains of walls, with stone blocks scattered all over the floor, coming from the walls that would have formed the living quarters.

Other details

It has a basin of carved stone and a feeding trough for pack animals.

It would have served for short stays and in times of war.

History

Long known in the area.
