Characteristics

Location

Starting from the Alzina del Sal.lari we head towards the coll de Tres Creus in the direction of the font de la Pola and reach the coll de Tanca (30/40 minutes). From the coll de Tanca we descend along the path that would lead us to the font de les Estelles, near the Pujol de Matarrodona. The path levels out and after crossing two gullies, it turns to our left, coming out at a rocky area from which we can see the north face of the castellots de Tanca and Montserrat. Just as we enter the oak grove again and after about ten metres, we come out on our right to meet the cliff. About twenty metres away we will find the Cova GEPEG, which has two entrances.

Description

Morphology

With a height of more than six metres, the mouth of the cova GEPEG appears divided into two entrances. The left one, which is a bit of a shaft, is a narrow descending gallery that does not exceed 6 metres, and the right one, which allows us to enter upright, and which has a slightly sinuous and ascending route of about ten metres, is also very narrow.

Speleothems

The cavity is heavily decorated and covered with anemolites, especially from the middle of its route onwards. In the last three metres, impenetrable, a dripping of the formations can be seen and the floor is covered with limestone concretion.

History

This cave was discovered, we do not know when, by the GEPEG group (Penya Excursionista Guimerà, Barcelona), as indicated in red paint at the entrance. Also painted there is the annotation “C-1”, which we do not know what classification it refers to. The cave is framed within a set of deep fissures found before reaching the font de les Estelles and the balma del Racó Gran de Matarrodona.
