Characteristics

Location

Starting from the Alzina del Sal.lari, we will go to the coll de Tres Creus, passing by la Porquerissa and the font de la Pola, and we will reach the coll de Tanca (approx. 30/40 minutes). We will go down along the path that leads to the font de les Estelles and the balma del Racó Gran de Matarrodona. When the path begins to level out (5 minutes from the coll) we will come out into an open space, sheltered by a gully, where on our left there is a rocky area with a conglomerate block right in the middle. This is the sign to leave the path on our right and go to find the base of the cliff, which we will follow until we find the entrance of the Cova de l'Esquirol. It is worth saying that if from the aforementioned rocky area we look toward the eastern cliff, we will see the cave entrance with a holm oak growing out of the interior.

Description

Morphology

We are before a wide and quite high entrance, about 7 metres with light at the back. The entrance appears divided by a fallen block that is considered by climbers 'the needle of the cave'. At five metres we find a step about two metres high. At the height of this step and in the opposite direction, another gallery opens, at least 6 metres long. The cavity continues with a lower ceiling, until the end of the gallery, where the floor drops more than one metre deep.

Progression

At five metres we find a step about two metres high that must be climbed by 'ramonage'. Continuing along our main gallery and after passing two more steps, we will reach the window that opens on our right and that as a viewpoint offers us a magnificent panorama over the pujol de Matarrodona.

History

Apparently it was discovered by a certain Joan Sánchez and Xavi Badiella (SIS-CET) had made a survey of it in 1977.
