Cova Fumada

Petita cova a les Sansuies (el Montmell)

Montmell, El • Baix Penedès5m0

Small cave in les Sansuies (el Montmell), a south-facing rock shelter, long known and documented by Jordi Navarro in May 2022.

Characteristics

Location

On the TP-2401 road of el Montmell and above km 3.5, take the turn-off towards the urbanització de les Masies de Sansuies, go up the main way until reaching the last buildings, from them we follow the track that climbs the Fondo de la Cativera along its right hydrographic slope, and in about 200 metres we descend by a new track towards the Fondo de la Cativera, the track crosses the Fondo and climbs the opposite slope to reach the col that separates it from the Fondo Estret, from this point a path leaves in a NE direction that runs along the crest, and leads us in about 160 metres to some small cliffs, the cave is at the base of these, on the left hydrographic slope of the Fondo de la Cativera, and above the last chalets of the Masies de Sansuies.

Description

Morphology

Rock shelter of small dimensions and facing S. Its approximate dimensions of about 8 metres of extent, 5 metres of depth and about 2.5 metres of average height, make it perfectly habitable.

Progression

Possible reason why the ceiling is seen blackened, a fissure towards the end of the main chamber as well as a small gallery at its E end, bring the maximum possible progression to an end.

History

Long known by the people of the area. Cited by Joan Virella in Miscel.lania Penedesenca in 1978, but without providing data. It is not, however, until May 2022 that Jordi Navarro (Centre Excursionista Castellar) locates it and does the documentation work to include it in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya (2023).
