A 39 m long cave in the Esplugues de Carme complex, in Anoia, formed by two superimposed small caves connected by a descending crawlway.

Characteristics

Location

Going along the BV-2131 road from la Pobla de Claramunt to Carme, about 150 metres from the bridge at km. 4 before reaching the latter locality, there is a turnoff to the left that leads to the hamlet of les Esplugues de Carme. Once you reach the first house there is a path that leads to the foot of the cliff, passing under the Cova del Temple, and about 7 metres up the wall hangs the Cova del Pou. A few metres further on you reach the cova del Bressol by a narrow but short ledge with no difficulty. A few metres further on and totally hanging from the cliff is the Cova dels Forats, which can be reached by a very dangerous ledge, since it is very slippery and there are no good holds.

Description

Morphology

It is basically formed by two small caves, one above the other, connected by a descending crawlway, forming respective balconies at different levels that open in the middle of the cliff.

History

Known since time immemorial.

The oldest data from a description of these caves are due to the Piarist P. Calonge, who visited them on 12 July 1885 and made a careful description of them, in addition to naming each cavity with a particular name: Temple, Pou, Bressol and Forats.

Later they were visited by Font i Sagué and by Almera, without much publicity. This came from Marià Faura i Sans who, on 14 September 1907, accompanied by Dr. Colomines, his nephew Timoteu Colomines (then president of the Club Muntanyenc) and the owner of Mas Guineu and of the land where the caves are located, made a visit, leaving a record of the writings by P. Calonge.

For years the caves have been visited by many people (especially the Cova del Temple for being the most accessible), some without many scruples when it came to maintaining their integrity.

It is not until the summer of 1973 that members of the GE Pedraforca again take an interest and make a topographic survey of the four cavities, naming them Coves de les Esplugues and numbering them from 1 to 4, from the westernmost to the easternmost.

Finally, F. Cardona publishes in 1989 a documented work on the complex of cavities, with new surveys and other data, the product of visits made with colleagues from the Espeleo Club de Gràcia.
