Cova del Prim

Petita cova d'uns 25 m. de recorregut a Esparreguera

Esparreguera • Baix Llobregat25m1m

Small cave about 25 m long in Esparreguera, an ancient fossilized spring excavated in 11000-year-old Holocene travertines, with three decorated chambers.

Characteristics

Location

Driving along the C-55 road from Olesa de Montserrat to Monistrol, at kilometre 7.1 take a turn-off to the right that passes the old spa of la Puda and follow the track —junctions with signs— until reaching Can Tobella (Can Tovella, on the ICC map). Continue through some fields at the end of which a short path leads to the font de Can Tobella. In the stream bed, above the spring, there is an inactive travertine waterfall about twenty metres high. To the left of this waterfall and about 8 metres up is the cave entrance.

Description

Morphology

Small cave about 25 m long. Through the narrow entrance one enters a first small chamber (Sala Morta), the one with the highest ceiling in the cavity. At the far end and to the right of this chamber, a narrow passage at floor level opens into a second small chamber (Sala de la Mola), elongated in shape, much lower and with the whole floor covered in clay sediments. Almost at the end and on the left-hand side, after passing another narrow passage, one reaches a third and last small chamber (Sala de les Mil i Una).

An ancient spring, today completely fossilized, with three outlet mouths, although it is only possible to enter this small cavity through one of them.

Speleothems

The first small chamber (Sala Morta) is heavily decorated and a stalagmitic flowstone stands out at the front. The third and last small chamber (Sala de les Mil i Una) is also heavily decorated.

Progression

Through the narrow entrance one enters the first small chamber. At the far end and to the right of this chamber, a narrow passage at floor level opens into the second small chamber. Almost at the end and on the left-hand side, after passing another narrow passage, one reaches the third and last small chamber.

Other details

It is excavated in Holocene travertines, very thick and dated at 11000 years, which cover the puddingstones that, being harder, condition the steps.

History

Cavity first explored by members of SIRE – UEC Olesa de Montserrat at the beginning of 1965. At the beginning of 1972, members of the Barcelona groups SE Gelera and GE Pedraforca carried out a campaign of cataloguing and study of the whole set of cavities in the area and also included this cave.
