Febró, La • Baix Camp 10m

Small cave at the base of the Serra Plana cliff (La Febró), known since ancient times and used as a shelter.

Characteristics

Location

From the T-704 road, between La Febró and the coll de Capafonts, at kilometre 32.435 where the road makes a 180-degree bend, we will climb the 50 metres of elevation gain over a distance of about one hundred metres to the Cova dels Coloms. Once there we will follow a faint path that runs along the base of the cliff in an easterly direction and reaches the cova del Corral. After covering 157 metres from the cova dels Coloms, we will find at the base of the cliff, at the point where a small torrent begins, the mouth of the cova de la Font. Following the base of the cliff in an easterly direction, 44 metres further on we find a small cave 3 metres [wide] where the entrance has been fitted with stones in the form of a dam, in order to collect the water that trickles inside (UTM-ETRS89:333367 – 4571973). From this point we will follow the base of the cliff in the same direction, where after 63 metres we will find this small cavity.

Description

Morphology

The mouth, almost 8 metres wide by 2.4 high, has on its right-hand side a natural wall that practically closes off access on that side. Inside it quickly loses dimensions, and we come to an ascending crawlway that does not reach one metre in height. From there a flat passage continues, narrowing until it becomes impassable.

Hydrology

At the entrance, stones have been fitted in the form of a dam in order to collect the water that trickles inside.

History

We have not found any reference to this cavity, but it is evident that it was known since ancient times and used as a shelter, since it is located at the base of the cliff at a point where there is a small flat area supported by a dry-stone wall in order to give more width to the entrance area of the cave.
