Description

Morphology

The cova del Gos is a sea cave of notable dimensions that led to the collapse of part of its ceiling. It has two entrances: one from the sea and the other through a 9-metre shaft that opens in the upper part of the cliff and is the product of the collapse, by undercutting, of part of the cavity's vault. This shaft is the meeting point of two joints that are likewise represented at the bottom of the cavity in the form of two short galleries. At present, a narrow rock bridge closes the mouth of the shaft. Its base is occupied by seawater and a small rock ledge where the waves break.

Hydrology

The floor is occupied by water with a bottom of sand and detached blocks, very rounded in the final stretch. It has not been possible to observe its functioning as a freshwater spring.

History

Known since remote times. It is not until 1918 that Joan Ferraté, in his work Espeleologia de les comarques tarragonines, mentions it with the number 101 of his catalogue, but he only refers to the place name. The place is very well known to the people of Tarragona and even the famous French photographer Lucien Roisin (Paris 1884 – Barcelona 1943), owner of the vanished shop La Casa de la Postal, on the Rambla de Santa Mònica in Barcelona, had published a postcard of the spot. Members of the ERE – CEC visited it and carried out the cataloguing work on 25-10-2017.
