Description
Morphology
The mouth is about 2 m high by 2.5 wide which, via a small step, gives access to a wide chamber about 8 m long, 3 m wide and almost 3 more high. At its back two passages open, one of reduced dimensions that is closed immediately and another, which is the continuation of the entrance area, but which diminishes considerably and progressively in its dimensions, both in height and width and which can be followed for about 7 m until it becomes so narrow that progression is impossible.
Outside, a few metres from the mouth, there is a passage with a very low ceiling, with the floor full of very fine sediments and which after a little more than one metre can no longer be advanced.
History
The cave must have been known and excavated for many years, possibly from the 1940's. Eduard Ripoll makes a brief mention in the archaeology chapter of the “Catálogo espeleológico de la provincia de Barcelona”, published by the Club Muntanyenc Barcelonès in 1961 and includes it within the group of cavities with Neolithic remains. We do not know when it was rediscovered by archaeologists who, through ignorance, called it Cova “X” and it is still cited with a third name: Cova de les Penyes Roges de Clivilleres (see: invarque.gencat).
In 1985 it was excavated by members of the AECC de Mediona and excavations by looters have also been detected.
