Description

Morphology

Large rock shelter (Balma gran) almost one hundred meters long and about 15 meters at the part where the overhang reaches deepest.

Hydrology

Inside it a spring rises that today is channeled to an underground tank.

Other details

Picnic area, gatherings, etc. Of no speleological interest. We do not have a survey.

History

Known since time immemorial. Salvador Vilaseca found flint tools there, probably from the Upper Paleolithic.

The most remarkable fact about this cavity is that in the summer of 1938 it was fitted out as a field hospital for the Republican troops in order to care for the wounded of the Battle of the Ebro; it had a capacity of 80 beds and 3 operating rooms.

The historian Angela Jackson wrote the book: Més enllà del camp de batalla. Testimoni, memòria i record d'una cova hospital en la Guerra Civil espanyola. (Cossetània, 2004).

In 1992 the Town Council bought the cave and the whole site was fitted out. At its foot there is a building with barbecues.
