A 36-metre-long cave in the municipality of Àger, on the upper cingle of the Montsec, also known as cova de Montardit.

Location

The cavity is located on the upper cingle of the Montsec, on its south face. To reach it, follow the paved track that climbs from Àger towards the coll d'Ares; when you reach the area of the plans de Badia and after passing the pallera del Montsec, continue along the track on the right that heads towards the Pla d'Escumó. When you reach the height of the canal de l'Embut, go up it until you enter the canal in the rocky part; at its upper part you will find a ledge that you follow eastwards until you reach the mouth of the cave, where the ledge practically ends, very close to the canal de Xurulla.

Description

Morphology

Mouth 4.4 x 1 metre, which gives lateral access to a gallery 28 metres long with an average width of between 4 and 6 metres. The height goes from one metre at the entrance mouth to 8 metres in the central part; at this point and on its north wall a small 2-metre shaft opens that leads to a lower gallery of 8 x 3 metres full of debris.

History

Known since ancient times, while on the north part of the Montsec (Moror, Guàrdia de Noguera) it is known as cova de les Set Sales, on the south side (Àger) it is known as cova de Montardit, because a resident of Àger remained hidden there during the civil war (1936-39).
