Characteristics

Location

At the entrance to the small village of Les Escaules there is a waterfall and a restaurant called la Caula; to the left of the waterfall and next to the house there is a staircase cut into the rock that leads to the entrance of the cave, hanging about 15 metres above ground level. Currently (2017) access is closed by the town council, following a rockfall at the waterfall. Access to the cave is pending rehabilitation due to a lack of safety measures. The cave is on private property.

Description

Morphology

The mouth is 6 metres wide by 3.50 metres high. It leads to a single gently ascending gallery, becoming steeper after about 20 metres up to a small final chamber, from which a chimney emerges at the surface. At the foot of the final ramp, the cavity opens laterally to the outside through a large opening of 4X5 metres. The walls are bare and the floor very dusty.

History

Known since time immemorial. In Faura i Sans in 1908 makes a mention of la Caula, but places it in the municipality of l'Escala.
