Cova de la Canal Freda

Petita cova d'uns 23 m. de recorregut a Sant Llorenç del Munt

Matadepera • Vallès Occidental23m5m

Small cave about 23 m long in Sant Llorenç del Munt, discovered in 1990.

Characteristics

Location

In the upper part of a torrent tributary of the Canal Freda, about 5 metres from the left side of the path to the font Soleia, on the way from the canal de Santa Agnès towards the Pi del Vent. Once the path passes over the ridge of la Roca Foradada, crossing a first secondary torrent of the Canal Freda, one soon reaches a second torrent, where the cave is located between the path and the cliff that runs along the head of the aforementioned torrent. A few metres further on begins the steep path that leads to the balma de la Pinassa, and a little further still the main torrent of the Canal Freda is crossed.

Description

Morphology

The entrance measures 1 metres wide by almost 2 high. With uniform sides and a perfectly rounded ceiling, it gives way to a straight gallery 15 metres long. The walls are completely smooth. The ceiling barely shows any deformity, except for a small hole at the start and a slight dip, already in the last metres. The floor is flat until the last 5 metres, where a constant ramp makes the passage higher, although the ceiling also slopes. Three small cracks in different directions conclude the main gallery of the cavity.

Speleothems

Right at the start of the slope of the entrance passage, we can turn off to follow an ascending diversion, where a small step must be climbed and then a low, heavily concretioned passage, thus reaching a fairly high little chamber (about 3 metres), totally covered by stalagmitic flowstone that follows the most hidden corners of the ceiling and walls of this final sector of the cave. From the ceiling also hang some tree roots that are at times covered by the stalagmitic concretions.

Progression

Right at the start of the slope of the entrance passage, we can turn off to follow an ascending diversion, where a small step must be climbed and then a low, heavily concretioned passage, thus reaching a fairly high little chamber (about 3 metres).

History

Discovered by chance by members of the SIS – CET in early December 1990 while searching for the balma de la Pinassa. At the end of the main gallery, however, they found the candles of anonymous people who had visited the cave before them.
