Cova de l'Om

Cova de l'Om

Petita cova que travessa la roca, Matadepera.

Matadepera • Vallès Occidental8m0

Small cave that passes through the rock in Matadepera, known since ancient times as Cova de l'Olm.

Characteristics

Location

The cave can be reached both from the upper part of the Mola (Monestir) and from the lower part (camí de la Soleia).

From the summit you must descend, off the usual path, towards the N until you find a gully, initially wide. A passage between rocks allows you to position yourself beneath the cliff and, from there, to the left you can go to the spring and to the right is the cave.

From the camí de la Soleia the climb is very steep. There are several possibilities. The most frequented route starts from the side of one of the torrents, where the cova de la Canal Freda is found. From there you must overcome a drop of more than 100 metres until reaching the spring and, afterwards, the cavity. You can also climb the bare rock face above the Panxa Contenta.

Description

Morphology

The entrance is triangular in shape and leads into a chamber of good dimensions, although it is only about 4 m long. A narrow passage follows that within a few metres reaches the entrance at the other end, hanging in a deep gully.

History

Known since ancient times. In the Guia monogràfica de Sant Llorenç del Munt, published by the Centre Excursionista de Terrassa in 1935 it already appears described as Cova de l'Olm.

One of the additional attractions of the visit to the cave and the spring of l'Om was explained by Lluís Verges i Solà, in his book "Bellesa i Atractiu de Sant Llorenç del Munt". It is the type of echo that can be heard from this upper cliff face on the N of the Mola.

As he left written, "if we position ourselves with our back to the cave and facing the Òbits and give a loud shout, it resounds five times, the last of all after a few seconds, when one least expects it. We call it the fluted echo, given that not all the replies resound with the same tone".

Lluís Verges describes the echo of the cave and the spring of l'Om as "the most marvellous" of Sant Llorenç del Munt.
