Characteristics

Location

Starting from the coll del Boix towards the turó del Mal Pas de Puigdoure, we will leave the turn-off to the Hospital de Sang on our left. Further on we will also leave the spur that leads to the agulles de Matarrodona and to the cova Bonica de l'Illa. We will take the next spur (spur 800, on the CET map, it coincides with the figure 800 of the contour line) branching off to our left and following the crest line. We will reach a cliff from where, right below, we will see the Agulla Petita de Matarrodona. We will descend on our right, finding a worn gully in the forest. On the left hydrographic side of this gully, divided into two parts by a small promontory, is the avenc de l'Ú, at approximately the 767-metre contour line. We will find the entrance at the first division as we come, just after descending a few metres and sheltered in a conglomerate block. If we finish descending this gully and glide over the rocky ground seen on our right, we will find that, going to meet the base of the Carboniferous level, we will have to cross a small gully and then, at the next bend, it is already that of the cova de l'U, with the foot of the entrance filled with tangled arítjols. Description

Morphology

An impressive 5-metre-high entrance, with a stalagmitic flow of equal dimensions, places us in a gallery 1.50 metres wide; after five metres of passage the cave becomes 0.20 metres wide at the base. The back of the cavity is separated by a column.

Speleothems

A stalagmitic flow of the same dimensions as the entrance, some macarrons hanging from the ceiling, as well as a microgour that was covered by very fine sediments.

Progression

Two drops of 1.50 metres and 1 metre respectively must be overcome to reach the back of the cavity.

History

It was discovered on 15-01-2000 by Jordi Guillemot and Clara Formosa of the Centre Excursionista de Terrassa.

The name was given to it by a rocky needle separated from the crag that dominates a raised spot situated right in the middle between the avenc de l'Ú and the cova de l'Ú; this promontory is known as the Fortalesa de l'Ú.
