Aiguafreda • Vallès Oriental42m13m

A 42-metre-long cave in the Montseny (Aiguafreda), known as Cova de l'Infern, with an internal route of passages, pits and sloping galleries.

Characteristics

Location

Located in the village of Aiguafreda. From the village, we head towards the font dels Enamorats and continue in the direction of the núcli d'Aiguafreda de Dalt. At this point we turn 180º, taking the track on the right in the direction of the font Fresca and the ruins of el Saüc. The track soon descends and reaches a junction; we continue along the track on the left, climbing for a short stretch, until we find a path signposted by the Parc (with a yellow stripe) that crosses the track. We follow the path to the right; after a little more than a hundred metres the path turns left and we find the mouth of the cavity right beside the path, on its right-hand side.

Description

Morphology

A small mouth right beside the path gives way to a narrow passage 4.5 metres long with a small one-metre step in the middle. At the end of the passage we find a narrow pit of 2 metres that places us in a sloping chamber of approximately 5x3 metres full of blocks. To the N., a gallery of 3 metres with a steep slope and a floor full of earth ends in an accumulation of rather unstable blocks. Back in the chamber, continuing towards the E., we find a gallery between the blocks where on the floor we find a small pit of 2.2 metres that places us on a lower level; from here a further step of 1.63 metres can be descended, where we find a gallery of 3 metres that ends in a zone of unstable blocks. From the point before the last step, we find a passage between blocks in a N. direction that places us in a small chamber with a continuation towards the E., but the narrowness does not allow passage. Back in the upper gallery at the entrance to the pit of 2.2 metres, we follow the gallery to the end where we find a pit of 1.79 metres; at the base we are in a joint that towards the NE. places us in the narrow impassable passage that leads to the chamber described above, while towards the SW. the sloping joint gradually narrows until reaching -13 metres of depth.

History

A small forat bufador at the edge of a path had been known for some time by members of the group Els Gafarrons – Amics de la Caminada de Sant Martí de Centelles i Aiguafreda. In May 2008, two members of this group, the brothers Antoni and Pere de Arriba, removed some blocks that were blocking the passage and were able to penetrate a few metres. At the beginning of 2010, Francesc Casanellas, also of the Gafarrons, got in contact with the ERE – CEC and on 30 January 2010 accompanied two members of the ERE to the cavity, carrying out the complete exploration and survey.

Since in winter a strong current of warm air comes out of the mouth, the friends from Aiguafreda decided to name it cova de l'Infern.

In October 2012, a group made up of members of the GEB, SIE-CEA, ECG and SES – Ger visited the cavity again and made a new survey, while exploring some new and small passages. They refer to the blog of the historian and hiker Francesc Roma, where he refers to the cavity while expressing the opinion that the most correct name would be Avenc de la Vinya Boja, due to its location, and also explains that around the year 2006 he communicated its existence to speleologists of the GIEG (Granollers) and presumes that they explored it at that time. We doubt this, since the Gafarrons d'Aiguafreda had work to do to clear the access to the cavity and no trace of a previous exploration was visible. For the same reason, we keep Cova de l'Infern as the main name, which is how this forat has always been known in Aiguafreda, and include the other as a synonym to avoid confusion.
