A 31 m long cave in Aiguafreda, known as cova del Moro, with graviclastic morphology and cave fauna.

Characteristics

Location

From Aiguafreda you have to go to carrer de Cruïlles and reach the cemetery. From here the track climbs, passes beside a quarry and reaches the access fence of the casa-castell de Cruïlles (recently restored). On the right, the track continues (no vehicles allowed sign), you must follow it and after a couple of bends and another of the “revolt de paella” type, you must continue to a point where the track describes a bend to the left and another to the right joined by a straight stretch (in the aerial photo it is clearly seen that the track forms a large “C”). A few metres after the upper bend a small path branches off to the left which in about 40 metres leads us to the mouth of the cavity.

Description

Morphology

At the bottom of a pit about 3 metres in diameter and about 2 metres in depth opens the mouth of the cavity in the form of a subvertical conduit, easily passable, and 4 metres in depth. From here, a gently sloping ramp places us at the point of maximum depth of the cavity and in the very middle of a gallery 18 metres long, wide and about 2 metres high. Suddenly the ceiling lowers, the gallery turns slightly to the left and one finds a laminator about 3 metres wide and little more than 3 metres long, where the cavity ends with a blockage of blocks. This final point almost coincides with another pit that we find outside shortly before reaching the mouth of the cave.

The dominant morphology is of the graviclastic type and most of the main gallery is covered by a thick clayey layer, on which a meander of a few centimetres in depth has been excavated.

Hydrology

On the clayey layer a meander of a few centimetres in depth has been excavated, the result of the temporary circulation of water in times of heavy rains.

History

Cavity known by the people of the area for a very long time, although the first speleological reference is provided by the members of the Grup Geogràfic de Gràcia who explored it on 26 January 1975, naming it cova de Cruïlles. It should be said that in Aiguafreda it has always been known as cova del Moro and so it appears on the ICC maps.
