Cova de Geguins

Cova de 55 metres de recorregut a Les Avellanes i Santa Linya.

Avellanes i Santa Linya, Les • Noguera55m17m

A 55-metre-long cave in Les Avellanes i Santa Linya, with a total elevation difference of 17.5 metres (-4.5/+13).

Characteristics

Location

From Santa Linya we will follow the LV-9043 road heading towards the Santa Linya railway station; just after leaving the village the road stops being asphalted, but it is suitable for all kinds of vehicles. On reaching kilometre 5.6 we find the bridge over the barranc de Geguins or Giguins according to the ICGC. The cave is located by going up the torrent until almost reaching the wall of the cliff that cuts the ravine, a few metres above the right hydrographic bank, and at the base of the cliff.

It is advisable to bring cutting tools due to the exuberant vegetation.

Description

Morphology

The cavity is divided into two parts: the lower galleries, generally high-ceilinged, with two narrow passages that connect small chambers, the last of which has some formations. The total elevation difference is 17.5 metres (-4.5/+13).

Speleothems

The last of the small chambers of the lower galleries has some formations. Once past an ascending vertical crawlway in the last small chamber, we find ourselves at the base of a steeply ascending gallery, with a good deal of lithogenic formation at the beginning and closed by rocks and sediments at the upper part.

Progression

Once past an ascending vertical crawlway in the last small chamber, we find ourselves at the base of a steeply ascending gallery, with a good deal of lithogenic formation at the beginning and closed by rocks and sediments at the upper part.

History

The discovery of the cova de Geguins and the nearby Abrics, which together are known as the coves de Geguins, is the result of various visits made by different excursion groups over the decade of the seventies of the last century; it is curious that they were carried out independently of one another, but all of them involved the collection of ceramic fragments, which caused significant disturbance of the materials and their partial dispersal. One of the first excursionists was Josep Enric Gómez, who on one of his outings found the cavity and collected a large fragment, which he later gave to the then Archaeology Section of the Institut d'Estudis Ilerdencs (IEI). With the data provided by him, an outing was carried out on 11 April 1977 that led to the provisional naming of the cavity as “Cova de la Cabra” due to finding inside it a goat skull probably not very old.
