Viladecavalls • Vallès Occidental28m8m

Small cave with a passage of 28 m very close to Viladecavalls (Vallès Occidental), first explored around 1990 and surveyed in February 2002.

Characteristics

Location

From the village of Viladecavalls itself, go towards the western end to find carrer de Monistrol; at its start there is a dirt track that meets the one leading to the farmhouse of Can Trullars. Follow it from its start, walking for about 5 minutes behind the houses, and a few metres after the first bend to the right, we will find the entrance shaft on the left-hand side of the path.

Description

Morphology

The mouth measures 9 by 4 metres and is funnel-shaped; via the lower lip and by means of a 2-metre rise one reaches the upper part of a descending ramp that leads at its end to a rather sinuous meander but of good height (4 metres); with a couple of twists one reaches the other entrance of the cave, where a fairly spacious chamber allows, after climbing up a mound of earth, exiting to the outside in the middle of a large bramble patch. Currently (2015), this upper mouth is also overrun by brambles.

The author of the record says that the cavity is excavated in sandy materials of the Quaternary or the Miocene. It really seems to be a package of Neogene sandstone covered by a package of very compact clay that has collapsed, giving rise to the entrance shaft.

Progression

It is advisable to return via the entrance mouth.

History

It was around 1990 that a small team from SIS – CE Terrassa and from GES – CM Terrassa first explored this curious cavity. At first they thought it was an artificial excavation, since in the earthy materials where it is found it was not normal to find a natural cavity. Once the exploration was carried out they confirmed that the hand of man had nothing to do with the origin of the cave; first, that it had no meaning or use, and second, that the meandriform shape of the lower gallery was clearly of natural origin.

In February 2002, Xavier Badiella (SIS – CET) visited it again and made the survey.
