Cova dels Matiners

Cova dels Matiners

Petita cavitat inèdita a la Serra de Collcardús

Vacarisses • Vallès Occidental18m6m

A small, previously undocumented cavity in the Serra de Collcardús, with a chamber with a sloping floor and an access drop, used as a hiding place during the civil war and the second Carlist war.

Characteristics

Location

The cavity is located in the Serra de Collcardús. From Viladecavalls (Can Corbera) take the paved track heading towards Can Boixeres – Sant Lluís; shortly before arriving, follow a track to the right that leads to Can Margarit and from there, also to the right, continue along another track (Camí romeu de Montserrat) that leaves you at the coll de Can Margarit, where the car can be parked. From the coll towards the E a ridge path sets out which must be followed for not quite a hundred metres and then descend a few metres towards the N slope, where the cavity is found.

Description

Morphology

An entrance of regular dimensions gives access to a drop of just over 3 metres in depth and easy to overcome, which allows access to the upper part of a chamber with a sloping floor and about 6 metres long until reaching a narrow passage that communicates with the final part of the gallery a few metres further on (elevation -5.5 m.). A couple of short side passages complete the development of the cavity.

Progression

The drop of just over 3 metres in depth is easy to overcome and allows access to the upper part of a chamber with a sloping floor and about 6 metres long until reaching a narrow passage that communicates with the final part of the gallery a few metres further on (elevation -5.5 m.).

Other details

Geologically, it is a case of carbonate breccias belonging to the Fm. Bretxes del Cairat (lithostratigraphic unit defined by Pere Anadón in 1978).

History

David Hernàndez, an enthusiast of the search for dry stone huts and with the collaboration of Lluís Turu of Viladecavalls, who had told him about a hideout of emboscats, was able to locate the cavity on 22 November 2018 and make a first visit. He then got in touch with Salvador Vives i Jorba and a few days later, on 25 November, they returned together, carrying out the complete exploration and the survey.

Apparently it had served as a hiding place during the civil war, but this use had already been made of it during the second Carlist war (also called dels matiners), as emerges from the conversation with Miquel Margarit (92 years old) of Viladecavalls, who still remembers when he was small going hunting with his father and him saying that the people of the village called that hideout dels Matiners.
