Characteristics

Location

From Ulldecona we head to Tortosa along the T-331 road; on reaching kilometre 2.8 we turn left onto a paved track and follow it to its end, where we turn right in the direction of the ermita de la Pietat; after 675 metres we park the vehicle and enter on the left of the track onto a path that passes some estates; we climb up to the third terrace and turn right, where we find an electricity pylon and a small masonry hut; we pass between the two and continue climbing the terraces of cultivated fields, following the stone cairns that divert us to the left and lead us straight to the pit. The route from the vehicle to the pit is 215 metres.

Description

Morphology

A narrow vertical shaft of 5 metres connects the cavity with the surface, and its base is a very irregular chamber entirely occupied by blocks and presenting some lithogenic formations at its ends. From this chamber two galleries run in opposite directions: to the N a passage begins, descending at first, of low height and about 15 metres in length, which ends, ascending, a few metres further on. On the S side of the chamber a small shaft of 4 metres opens, connecting with a lower gallery that is flat and straight, about 25 metres long, of variable section and ending in a very low passage choked with sediments.

History

Known since time immemorial by the people of the area. It seems it had served as a hiding place during the war. Explored by the Grup Espeleològic d'Ulldecona since the mid-1960s. Members of the SIE – CEA visited it during Holy Week of 1974 accompanied by Joaquim Virgili (GEU). Our friend Floren Fadrique has visited it on some occasions during his biospeleological research in the Montsià and tells us that to distinguish it from the Cova Bonica located at the summit of the Montsià, this one is called (among those of his circle) Cova Bonica de Godall, because of its orographic situation, not because of the municipality.
