Characteristics

Location

From Ulldecona we will head to Tortosa along the T-331 road; on reaching kilometre 2.8 we will turn left onto a paved track until the end of it. Here we will turn left and follow the track for 265 metres, where we will park the vehicle in front of the house “Pepita del Oro”. Then we will go back 135 metres along the track we have come by and turn off onto a path on the left that climbs straight up alongside the crop fields. At the end of this, after having covered some 300 metres, we will find on the left a large block serving as a cairn; we will continue traversing to the left following the cairns and after 160 metres we will reach the pit. At the head we find a 10 bolt without a hanger, and at the start of the aerial section another bolt with a hanger.

History

Despite the large entrance of the pit, which is perfectly visible in the ICGC orthophoto, it has never been cited or catalogued speleologically, although at a local level it has been known for quite some time, especially by hunters. It was first explored in early 2020 by David Tomàs Millan, from Ulldecona, who cited it with the name of the person who indicated its existence to him; the last exploration was carried out in June 2020, publishing a brief note with some photos on the social network Facebook, reporting that the cavity had no continuation. The Espeleoíndex team contacted Agustí Barceló, from Ulldecona, who knew the cavity and who has already collaborated other times with Espeleoíndex; he accompanies us to the cavity in July 2020. Later David Tomàs sent us the data and survey of the cavity; the height difference of this we find somewhat exaggerated, it is possible that the measurements have been taken from the upper lip of the cavity.
