Cova Alta d'en Vitaia

Cova Alta d'en Vitaia

Petita cova i avenc penjada a la zona de Cala Romaguer (Sant Feliu de Guíxols)

Sant Feliu de Guíxols • Baix Empordà27m13m

Small cave and pit (avenc) hanging in the Cala Romaguer area (Sant Feliu de Guíxols)

Characteristics

Location

The optimal route to access the cavity is: park the cars on the Tossa de Mar to Sant Feliu de Guíxols road (GI-682), at km. 39.5. From here a path heads toward the sea, which we will descend, slanting slightly to the left in the direction of the punta del Romaguer. Soon we will leave the Mediterranean grove to go into the rocky area beside the cliffs; we must be careful, trying to follow a faint path marked with some white-colored marks. To the right of the path and almost touching the cliff face, we will find the mouth of the pit. If we do not want to descend it, we must continue descending along the path, to turn right and skirt the crag. Among prickly pears, and with the cliff on the left, we will find the viewpoint-mouth of the Cova alta d'en Vitaia.

Description

Morphology

If we want to access from the mouth of the pit, we will find a shaft of 10.5 metres structured in a joint; this fracture has a variable width of about 0.7 metres and a length of about 10 metres. The shaft opens laterally into the cave chamber. This chamber emerges onto the cliff face through a large mouth of 6×6 metres, being a spectacular viewpoint over the sea. If we come from the base of the shaft, we have a ceiling height of 3.8 metres, a small sandy platform and a slope that leads us to the mouth after about 5 metres of route. The fracture of the pit continues to the right and left in a SW-NE direction, being penetrable only about five metres, the NE branch. Both branches have a small opening to the outside. Also, at the base of the shaft we find a rise of +1.6 that leads us to an ascending gallery of 3 metres of route. Following the path, 4 metres below the Cova Alta d'en Vitaia, there is a small cave made up of a single chamber of 2.6 metres diameter with a ceiling of about 3 metres in height. Its route is only 3 metres and it is evidently related to the upper cave.

History

Known since remote times. It turns out, however, that in Sant Feliu there are two caves with the same name. This one and a sea cave, as witnessed by some black-and-white postcards from the 1920s and 1940s, where a boat is seen entering the cave. Evidently it is not this one. In 1983, Lluís Pallí, in his map of coastal toponyms, chose to name this one Cova Alta d'en Vitaia, to distinguish it from the sea cave known by the same name, which he places in the Mas Pei area, next to another that he says is the Cova dels Contrabandistes and another as Cova de Can Pei. In the summer of 1963, Joan Senent (ERE – CEC) explored a good number of sea caves in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. Among others, without giving data, he cites: Cova d'en Vitanya (sic) and Coves Mongetes (he says there are 3). The caves of Mas Pei are located next to Cala de ses Mongetes and in front of the reefs called ses Mongetes. Therefore, everything seems to indicate that one of the caves of Mas Pei (possibly the one catalogued as no. 1) is the Cova d'en Vitaia. But to complicate it a little, in 2004 a guide to places of the Costa Brava appears (Albert Gironès) that makes a careful description of the Cova Alta d'en Vitaia, calling it Cova del Contrabandista or d'en Bitalla, where he explains that the cave had been the collection point for contraband, which was done from the boat to the cave by hauling the 'goods' up with ropes. These are the data that appear in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya. Vol. 4 (Jordi de Valles, 2010). It is clear enough that there are two caves of d'en Vitaia and two of Contrabandista/es, but we do not know who this person was. We have found an article where the motives or nicknames of people from Sant Feliu de Guíxols in the 18th century are collected and the one of Vitaia appears, without specifying which person or family it corresponded to. Given to speculating, and with a bit of humor, we could think that this Vitaia was the head of the contrabandists and had two work points; the sea cave could serve him as a general store and the cave hanging on the cliff (cova penjada) was the logistics center. Finally, on 26-1-2020 members of the GE Badalona and of the CE de Castellar del Vallès visit it and carry out the complete cataloguing work.
